Can I eat halloumi without cooking?
Originating from Cyprus, halloumi is a semi-hard, un-ripened, brined cheese that can be made from cow, sheep or goat’s milk. It can be eaten raw but is truly delicious cooked, having a high melting point, makes it an excellent choice for grilling or frying.
Does halloumi have to be served hot?
Plain halloumi (either fried or grilled) is best when it’s served immediately. It tends to become rubbery when cooled after cooking, and I haven’t found great results when microwaving it.
How should halloumi be cooked?
Slice the halloumi into ½cm/¼in thick slices. Heat a dry frying pan over a medium heat, then add the cheese. Allow to toast for 2–3 minutes, or until the halloumi is golden-brown. Flip and repeat on the other side.

There are many, many recipes in which halloumi is much better fried. Golden-delicious grilled or fried halloumi creates a texture and flavour which pairs so well with both cooked and raw vegetables, meats, in burgers, wraps or for breakfast.
Can you eat halloumi cold after cooking?
It’s great for salads and side dishes because you can serve it cold or two days old and it will still taste nice. You can add this tasty cheese to salads as well as serving it on its own. Some Mediterranean meals involve serving it up as a yummy breakfast!
Can you eat leftover halloumi?
Yes, leftover halloumi is great when eaten cold. It will have lost some of its squidgyness and have a harder texture, but it will still be delicious. You can eat it by itself, in a salad or a wrap, or paired with some fruit or meat.
Can you put halloumi in the oven?
Bake it. Halloumi is also great baked – add slices to an ovenproof dish and drizzle with olive oil and herbs or spices. It’ll need about 10-15 minutes in a 200C/fan 180C/gas 6 oven. The halloumi soaks up the flavours whilst baking so it’s an easy way to add extra welly to your dishes.
How long does halloumi last once opened?
Opened halloumi can stay good in the refrigerator for two weeks. Keep opened halloumi in a brine solution that is a salt solution and make it last longer for up to three weeks in the fridge. You can also increase its shelf life by freezing but make sure you wrap halloumi properly before placing it in the freezer.
Why is halloumi squeaky?
The same protein clumps created by the acid in Paneer and the rennet in Halloumi are what give these cheeses their signature squeak. The sound is coming from the long protein strands rubbing against the enamel of your teeth.
How long should you cook halloumi?
Cut the halloumi into 1cm thick slices and dry fry in a non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Cook halloumi for 1-2 mins. When it starts to brown and crisp up turn the pieces over and cook on the other side for another minute or two.
